Advanced Ballet
Advanced Ballet is compulsory for students wishing to undertake an exam and/or students in competition troupes.
Students from Cecchetti Grade 1 and above who wish to undertake an exam must take 2 classes at that level per week - one Ballet Performance and one Advanced Ballet at the appropriate level.
The timeless Cecchetti Principles of grace, balance and line form the basis of a sound training syllabus that has been developed to meet the needs of today's modern child. The Cecchetti method teaches co-ordination, poise, confidence, rhythmical sense and musicality while ensuring that the process is still fun!
The syllabus has been carefully structured to ensure that the student receives well-balanced training, with each grade for younger dancers designed to build progressively to the senior levels (Majors.)
Cecchetti-trained dancers have achieved great success throughout the world. They are generally well-regarded for their purity of line and for their ability to adapt easily to other forms of dance. HAPA’s Cecchetti dancers are no exception, having received a 100% pass rate in examinations.
Ballet Performance
Students who wish to learn ballet but do not want to do exams will love our Ballet Performance classes. These classes teach the principals of the Cecchetti method of ballet without the pressure of exam preparation. The class consists of syllabus work as well as learning routines for performances.
Although exams are not compulsory in this class, there is still an emphasis on correct classical technique, the traditions of ballet and instilling discipline
Ballet Performance is a compulsory class for students wishing to undertake an exam.
Pre Pointe
At HAPA students begin preparing for pointe work during Grade 4/Ballet Performance 3, with the 30min Pre-Pointe class. This is generally around age 10-11, however, may be different for some students. During this class students work in bare feet to learn pointe technique and combinations, and to develop the strength they will need to dance en pointe. The aim is that students will go en pointe after a year of Pre Pointe training, however as each student responds to the demands of pointe preparation differently, some will need longer than others to be ready for pointe work.
The Pre Pointe class runs at the Junior Campus only.
Pointe
When students have been properly assessed and meet certain technical criteria they will be able to dance en pointe. At HAPA we run 3 levels of Pointe Class. Acceptance into each level is determined by the students strength and ability en pointe, not their age.

Pointe classes run at the Senior Campus only
Jazz Performance
Jazz classes at HAPA are taught with an emphasis on developing strong technique and jazz skills such as kicks, jumps and turns. Students explore a range of jazz styles such as musical theatre, commercial jazz, jazz ballet, funk, Latin, lyrical and Fosse. During the Jazz Performance class students also learn routines for performances.
Advanced Jazz Technique
This class is an extension of Jazz Performance with students learning more detailed jazz dance technique and more difficult skills. Like the Advanced stream in ballet, Advanced Jazz is aimed at students who wish to pursue their dancing at a higher, more focussed level.
Tap Performance
Tap is a style of dance that emphasises rhythm and musicality. Generally, tap dancing is taught in the traditional style (Gene Kelly, Fred Astaire) However, the HAPA tap teachers like to incorporate modern tap styles such as street tap and funk.

Contemporary
Contemporary dance is an evolution of classical ballet. More free than the traditional classical discipline, contemporary allows both the dancer and the choreographer the opportunity to explore the body and its movement potential with greater freedom than ballet or even jazz.

Hip Hop
An off shoot of Jazz dance, Hip Hop is an urban street style of dance. Performed to modern music, Hip Hop is a fun and energetic style of dance. (Goes great with a cheerleading class!)
Strength & Conditioning
This class is an absolute must for the serious dancer! HAPA's dance strength and conditioning program focuses on each student as an individual dancer. The aim of the class is to fix any problem areas students may have whilst increasing their existing skills. The class caters to high level dancers in all styles offered at HAPA. This class is free for any student enrolled in a comp troupe class or an Advanced Ballet class.
Competition Troupes
Competition participation enhances the skills and confidence of the serious performer. By regularly performing at an advanced level, students will find their skills increase exponentially.
At HAPA, competitive dance is rewarding and fun because we focus on performance experience, artistic development and confidence over winning.
Competition Classes are by audition only and are based on age and ability. Several routines in various styles of dance will be learnt in each class, however, the emphasis is on performance skills, learning choreography and polishing the unison of the troupe. Dance skills and technique are to be learnt in style specific classes.
Song & Dance
This class prepares students for the higher level classes in the Musical Theatre stream by giving them introductory training in vocal techniques and dance. There is an emphasis on the musical theatre style with students learning the importance of incorporating acting and performance skills into both the singing and dancing elements.
This is a great class for singers and actors who want to learn to dance or dancers who want to learn to sing.
Broadway
Incorporating the 3 elements of singing, dancing and acting this class aims to create the ultimate triple threat performer! Students learn the fundamentals of script work and the importance of telling a story through song & dance. Musicals are explored throughout the ages from the classics like Oklahoma! to modern masterpieces such as Wicked and Hairspray.
Like song and dance, this is a great class for students who are wanting to expanding their skills beyond a single discipline.
